The beginning of a long-term career.
After three years with Rutherford and Bond in Wellington, I’m doing what I love. I’m getting more training and learning more about the business than I could ever imagine.
I’ve always had a goal to build a career around my passion for cars.
I threw everything I had into it and after six months was successful in getting a job as Wheel Alignment Technician. Within two months I started my apprenticeship and in the last two years I’ve learnt heaps through training, theoretical learning, courses and assessments through the ‘NZ Motor Industry Training Organisation’ (MITO), and technical training at Toyota New Zealand HQ in Palmerston North.
Where to from here? Hopefully a role in management somewhere within the Toyota family. And who knows, maybe I’ll get to pursue my passion for professional car racing!
I realised early on that Toyota isn’t just another big corporate. They’re a company based on some pretty special principles that underpin everything they do.”
The opportunities are endless! Once you’re qualified, we’ll support you through further training to assist you progress and become an Advanced Technician. From there you can also move into management or customer service roles within the workshop or in other areas of the dealership. At Toyota, there’s even CEO’s and Branch Managers who started as Apprentice Technicians.
If you can prove you have commitment, work ethic and the right attitude, you’re well on the way! It’s likely you’ll start in the grooming area where you’ll get the chance to demonstrate that you have initiative and good communication skills. You’ll need to like a job that is practical, constantly challenging, and full of learning.
Time spent in an automotive workshop would be useful and you can also complete a Level 2 National Certificate in Motor Industry (Entry Skills) before beginning an Automotive Technician Apprenticeship. This will give you many of the basic skills we’re looking for. The rest you’ll learn on the job.
